In *Fontaine-Wolf caput Mortuum I*, Rebecca deploys a materially driven, contemporary approach that fuses classical reference with a sharply current sensibility. Anchored by the alchemical pigment “caput mortuum”—a deep, earthen violet historically associated with memento mori and transformation—the work stages a dialogue between ruin and renewal. Layered tonal fields and incisive, gestural marks suggest a head-like apparition (“caput”) and animal presence, hovering between figuration and abstraction. Rebecca’s technique privileges sedimentation: veils of colour, abrasion, and staining build a surface that reads as both archaeological and visceral. The result is a psychologically charged painting that speaks to ecological anxiety, mythic hybridity, and the persistent cultural pull of the gothic sublime.
