Biography

Sandra Chevrier (b. 1983) is a Montreal-based Canadian contemporary pop-urban artist known for her hyper-realistic mixed-media portraits of women — most notably the breakthrough "Cages" series, which critiques societal expectations and limitations placed upon women.

She developed her artistic practice in childhood through obsessive sketches of eyes — a focus that evolved into her signature gaze-centred style. Self-taught as a painter, she holds a Bachelor's degree in Visual and Media Arts from UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal).

The Cages series depicts women trapped within comic-book-inspired cages that symbolise imprisonment by societal norms, beauty standards and self-imposed limitations — blending watercolour, collage and pop-art elements with Marvel and DC superhero iconography to highlight fragility amid power. This feminist work has led to sold-out print releases, celebrity collectors including Alicia Keys, and international acclaim.

She has collaborated with Shepard Fairey on a twelve-storey mural in Austin, Texas ("The Beauty of Liberty and Equality", 2020) for the centennial of the 19th Amendment, and created a mural with the band The National for Lollapalooza at Berlin's Olympic Stadium. She describes herself as a "gaze collector".
