From Pure Evil's signature *I Dream of…* (Nightmares) series, this 2019 stencil-spray canvas depicts Marilyn Monroe in flat blocks of black and white against a hot Martian-Manhunter green ground — a single black tear bleeding from her right eye in the artist's trademark gesture. Edition 7 of 10; every canvas in the series is finished in a unique background colour, making each impression effectively a unique work.
Pure Evil is the moniker of British street artist Charles Uzzell-Edwards (b. 1968, Wales). The grandson of Welsh painter John Uzzell-Edwards and great-grandnephew of the wartime Cabinet minister Sir Stafford Cripps, he moved to San Francisco in the early 1990s where he became immersed in the city's nascent street-art scene before returning to London in the mid-2000s.
