About This Work
Melanie Hampshire (left) and Jill Kennington (right) are photographed in Mary Quant dresses as they chat with British guards during a 1963 Life feature. The designs, respectively titled "Bank of England", and "Eton", were meant to call attention to contemporary gender inequalities both in their names and their featuring masculine pinstripes and large powerful lapels in feminine A-line shapes.
About the Artist
Sir Norman Parkinson (1913–1990) was a British portrait and fashion photographer whose four-decade career transformed the aesthetic of 20th-century magazine work. Shooting for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Town & Country, he took models out of the studio into landscapes, streets and factories — humanising fashion photography and paving the way for the modern editorial image.
