Three velvet-capped women huddle in gossip as another looks on during an October 1949 Vogue photoshoot entitled "Young Velvets, Young Prices". Taken from the roof of the Condé Nast building on Lexington Avenue, this photograph captures the beauty of Manhattan's skyline complete with the Chrysler and Empire State buildings in full view.
About the Artist
Sir Norman Parkinson (1913–1990) was a British portrait and fashion photographer whose four-decade career transformed the aesthetic of 20th-century magazine work. Shooting for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Town & Country, he took models out of the studio into landscapes, streets and factories — humanising fashion photography and paving the way for the modern editorial image.
