About This Work

A model wears a black dress and hat while posing in oncoming New York traffic as part of a photoshoot for Queen magazine in 1963. Celebrated for his innovative and unique body of work, photographer Norman Parkinson was known for taking models out of the traditional studio environment and capturing them out in the world.

About the Artist

Sir Norman Parkinson (1913–1990) was a British portrait and fashion photographer whose four-decade career transformed the aesthetic of 20th-century magazine work. Shooting for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Town & Country, he took models out of the studio into landscapes, streets and factories — humanising fashion photography and paving the way for the modern editorial image.
